Started Underground Now We’re (Almost) Here

Everything’s finally coming together! Today we finished our last full day of work in the community, and have now completely finished 4 out of 6 housing foundations. Tomorrow we will put the finishing touches on the final two foundations and our project will be officially complete, 3 days ahead of schedule! There was a time when we were worried that we wouldn’t finish according to our schedule, but after working with the community and our masons for 2 weeks, we were able to accomplish tasks better and faster than when we first began! Tasks like staking out excavation sites that took us well over 30 minutes at one point took us less than 5 minutes to complete! Thanks to more experience on our part and increasing community involvement as their homes start to take shape, we should be completely done in the next 24 hours!

Over the last two days, we also had the chance to talk to some community members about the impact of the homes on their lives, as well as addressing other issues that face the community. We also had the chance to talk to the women about the bath soap making project that Jamie had started with them and how they could improve the program going forwards! We’ll continue to discuss some of these issues with the community over the next two days before we head out!
